Lesson 4
What We Learned
We talked a bit about yarn skeins, and the best way to pull the yarn from the skein. The term “yarn barf” was mentioned that describes when you pull from the center of the skein and “blobby mess” of yarn comes out. We talked about the benefit of yarn winders (no knots!) and how it winds yarn into “cakes”.
We reviewed the double crochet stitch (dc) that was introduced last class and practiced this. This is one of the main stitches all projects use. It’s important to be very comfortable with this stitch. (practice, practice, practice)
The half double crochet (hdc) was quickly introduced, but our focus was on the double crochet stitch.
The Mesh Stitch was taught. Expanding on the Mesh stitch, you can make complex patterns by following charts of open and solid spaces that is referred to as Filet Crochet. I explained by using open spaces like the mesh stitch, combined with solid blocks you can create simple and complicated designs.
Mesh Stitch
In the crochet world, there are not hard standards for naming of stitches and patterns. There are many variations of how to do a stitch, and often multiple names for the same stitch. (similar to a recipe).
This is a link to the mesh stich pattern that we learned. I recommend you only use this pattern for reference and review. If you do a Google search or Youtube search, you are not going to find this exact pattern variation that we did and it will most likely confuse you.

Filet Crochet
Filet Crochet expands on the basic mesh stitch to create open and solid blocks to create a pattern that you read from a chart.
This website has a very good tutorial to explain Filet Crochet basics in detail. It has photos, drawings, patterns and a chart to make a filet crochet swatch.
