Half Double Crochet Ribbed Stitch

What We Learned

We learned a variation of the basic stitch half double crochet, that is also known as a ribbed stitch.

By working in the back loop only of the top row, it creates a textured effect that has stretch to it.

This is great for making a blanket, hat or scarf.  Combining it with other stitches, you can add ribbed edging like hat brims, sleeve cuffs…

Since this was so simple to master, we are taking it a step further and learning how to make hats from a rectangle using this stitch.

We talked about the different sizes and dimensions to consider when making hats for babies up to adults.  I passed out a chart for sizes.  Google crochet hat chart if you need to reference. There are many resources available.

Homework

Bring a completed rectangle to the next lesson where I will show how to join the side and cinched the top.

*If you have a tapestry needle, please bring one to class.  (Tapestry needles have a large eye and blunt tip that make it easy to work with yarn.)

We will donate these hats to a local charity.

HDC Rib Stitch

The hdc rib stitch is a variation of the half double crochet stitch.   The only change is that you work in the back row of the loop instead of both.

This video shows how to do this stitch
