What We Learned
We reviewed the stitches we were introduced in Lesson 1 and moved on to learning a simple pattern based on the chain stitch and single crochet stitch.
The crochet stitch is called Moss Stitch. It is a simple repeat of the two stitches and creates a tight textured pattern. This stitch is great for scarves, blankets, bags, so many things!
Moss Stitch (aka Linen Stitch)
Written Instructions
sc – single crochet
ch – chain
Foundation chain must be an EVEN number.
Row 1: sc in second chain from hook, *ch1,skip next (foundation) chain, sc in next (foundation) chain space.*
Repeat from * to* until the end of the row.
Ch1, turn.
Row 2: *ch1, sc in first ch-1 space *.
Repeat from * to* until the end of the row.
Ch1, turn.
Repeat row 2 until desired length.
The last stitch in every row is a single crochet (sc)
Homework
Practice, Practice Practice!
Practice the Moss stitch over and over until you are completing rows without mistakes. After you complete each row, look to see if there is a mistake. Count your stitches, it should always be the same amount.
If your rows are growing or shrinking, use stitch markers.
The finished piece should be about 4 inches square.
Remember:
- Starting chain should be an EVEN number.
- With medium weight yarn and around a size 5 hook, it was about 16 chains. This depends on the yarn you are using, hook size and how loose or tight you crochet. So you may need to start with 18 or 20 chains.
- The last stitch in every row will be a single crochet (not a chain)
- At the end of every row, chain two, turn. Your first stitch will then be a single crochet in the “hole” from the prior row.
Bring your finished 4″ square project to the next class. (Do not cut the yarn, we are going to continue with a new task on this piece)
